Acne: Causes & Treatment

Acne is a genetic disease representing an excessive response of the hair follicle unit to normal levels of circulating androgens. It affects the majority of adolescents, however it can remain active or even appear for the first time after the age of 25, especially in women, which is why it is called "adult female acne". To a lesser extent, the lesions persist in a mild form until the age of 40.

The cause is the increased production of sebum and the hyperkeratosis (many dead cells) of the skin in the presence of pathogenic microorganisms (corynebacterium, staph). It occurs mainly on the face, while it can extend to the chest and back. Acne lesions can be mild (black and white spots) or more severe, inflammatory (blisters and papules) that can develop into cysts and nodules and leave scars after they have escaped. Factors such as stress and pregnancy can affect acne. Also the ultraviolet radiation (sun) gives us an illusion of improving acne, but in autumn it comes back stronger. Generally, hot and humid climates make acne worse. Acne treatment should be immediate and systematic so that we do not have side effects with infections, scars and scars. In cases of persistent and severe acne may need medication with topical preparations (retinoic acid, benzene peroxide), antibiotics (tetracyclines, erythromycin), hormones (estrogens, antiandrogens), isotretinoin. The aesthetic treatment of acne includes the following stages:

  1. Deep cleansing and exfoliation, to remove sebum and dead keratinized cells.
  2. Application of acidic fruits, antibacterial agents, essential oils and herbs in order to reduce inflammation, strengthen the skin and improve healing.
  3. Application of intense pulsed light to fight pathogenic microorganisms and regenerate the skin.
  4. Herbal peels that do not sensitize the skin, on the contrary make it stronger and healthier, to improve the two colors and scars.
  5. Selected cosmetics for proper and effective skin care.
